7th March will be a red letter day for Merseyside knitters and
crocheters. It’s launch day for the Good Wool Shop in Formby, a new shop specialising in natural and British yarns. The launch should draw plenty of attention,
with Chapel Lane yarn-bombed in handknitted bunting and local knitters
converging en masse.
Opening within Derbyshire’s, a much loved local business where you can already find fine flowers, cards and gifts. And if the excitement gets too much there are always refreshments at Cathy’s tea rooms at the back of the shop.
Isabel Jordan, the new shop’s owner, describes the two fold aims of the shop. “I’ve kept hearing from Formby people that there’s nowhere to buy cotton, buttons or ribbons, and that they needed somewhere to supply the many local knitting groups. At the same time, I’ve found that there is hardly anywhere in the area where I could buy the natural yarns which I prefer to knit with. Putting those needs together with my own dream of running a yarn shop, there could be only one outcome!”
The Good Wool Shop will stock a range of yarns for all budgets, with man made fibres from Wendy, Robin and others alongside affordable cottons, pure wool and blended yarns. There will be more luxurious ranges on offer too, with favourites, new designer lines from Erika Knight and others. Isabel is a firm believer in supporting British wool producers and will be stocking Wendy Ramsdale DK alongside Erika Knight.
The yarns on offer will be backed up with all the essential knitting and crochet tools and a selection of haberdashery.
To encourage people of all ages and abilities to make the most of this new treasure trove, the Good Wool Shop will be hosting classes for beginners and workshops for the more experienced. A regular drop-in knit and crochet group will be held at Cathy’s tea rooms every Thursday too, so there really will be something for everyone.
The Good Wool Shop is at Derbyshire’s, 22 – 24 Chapel Lane, Formby, Liverpool L37 4DU. Opening is on 2 March, with launch event on 7 March. Website (going live 2 March) www.thegoodwoolshop.co.uk.
